John Coltrane
A Love Supreme ![]() | Ascension ![]() |
A Love Supreme is generally considered to be among Coltrane's greatest works, because it melded the hard bop sensibilities of his early career with the free jazz style he adopted later. The album is a four-part suite broken up into tracks: "Acknowledgment", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm".
This directly symbolizes the struggle of the characters and their addictions, and the steps they have to take in order to fight for ongoing sobriety. Ascension is the opposite, considered to be Coltrane's watershed album. On Ascension group ensembles alternate with solos, the horn section is monolithic and the entire sound is chaotic. The basic theme stated in the opening and closing ensembles is a variation on the major motif of A Love Supreme. So these two albums are a distinctly night and day. One represents the importance of harmonious unity and building with others while the other represents chaos.
